Fiddler on the Roof<br>

This is a musical play currently showing at One Stage at Greenbelt, Ayala that runs from November to 1st week of December. Its about a Jewish father named Tevye (sounded awfully Tevyer during the show) who must break the tradition to keep his daughters happily married. In this tradition, poor Jewish girls are fortunately matched with rich but older Jewish businessmen by a town’s official matchmaker. However, it seems that the younger generation is breaking away from the culture to follow what really goes on with their heart. A poor father of five, Tevye compromises tradition to keep his family intact.

Drumline Poster

There really should be a comparison review among films involving contests in music, dance, or sports. As we realize it, most stories (either based on a true story or not) has an ending of a tie-breaker. Another bad note in this film is that same leading lady which we’ve seen at Stomp The Yard that makes us want to scream, Will you ever quit and go out of your comfort zone?, since she’s been there and done that.

If you love to watch dance orchestrated films, Drumline is a combination of music and dance performances as we see how our marching bands struggles to bust a move during half time. It’s like watching the younger relatives of American Pie in the summer band camp only training as if you’re in the movie of The Replacements. It’s also the battle between old school and new sounds where there is a tradition we’ve seen in most closed knit groups that should be respected and followed. I now wonder what happens during my friend Kiel’s cheering practice with the Rektikano cheer during his time at tertiary school or how difficult it really is to spell when doing tricks at national TV. The feeling could be as close as to what Drumline tells. Oh yes, how well can you stand straight for a dawn to sunset practice while holding your instrument and shaking your bonbon the whole time. It’s actually nastier than ballet practice where your shoes get stained red blood.

seven brides for seven brosSeven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954)
Running Time: 1:45
Cast: Howard Keel, Jane Powell
Genre: musical / classics
Rating: 9/10

A hillbilly heads to town and comes back to his farm with a new bride. The house goes from pig sty to Cribbs material in a day. His six brothers get to know what a change of clothes is like. Suddenly everyone wants in on the marrying act, but the town, and especially its bachelors, isn’t ready to give up six of its ladies to these outsiders. It’s a musical with a whole lot of singing, dancing, and some crazy stunts that would make Jackie Chan blush. If you want laid-back and fun oldies then this won’t disappoint. Just don’t try out the stunts at home (or at your local construction site).

The ProducersThe Producers (2006)
Running Time: 2:15
Cast: Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick, Uma Thurman, Will Ferrell
Genre: musical / comedy / classics
Rating: 9/10

You’ve got the craving for musicals ever since High School Musical, but don’t know where to start. Plus, you’ve already seen The Sound of Music, Annie, and Oliver Twist because they’re standard high school english class musicals. Then The Producers is the movie for you. Only one of two limited release films I intentionally went out of my way to watch, The Producers movie is a Mel Brooks remake of his 1960s movie and Broadway musical. A Broadway producer and an accountant figure they can possibly earn more money financing a flop than a hit, so they set out to produce the lousiest written play they find (the title’s too funny to spoil). How will things turn out? You can rent the DVD or catch it on HBO this month (9PM Oct 28). Features an all-star cast who sing pretty well for people who don’t usually have singing roles in their movies.
