Tinseltown’s churned out over a dozen blockbusters from Night at the Museum to Transformers to The Bourne Ultimatum, but save a couple of upcoming December films (which probably won’t be shown here this year, thank you very much Metro Manila Film Fest), moviegoers are better off checking out the new TV fall lineups (see featured reviews). So as we close the year in movies as early as October, it’s time to check out what the big oh-8 has in store.

Jumpstart January
In this installment of Flick Pick Special: 2008 Lineup, we take a look at some of the movies greeting the new year. No ought-to-go-straight-to-video tear jerkers here; it’s all-out testosterone-filled action, just the way we like it.

i am legendI Am Legend 01.01 (RP) 12.14 (US)
Cast: Will Smith
Links: official site
Details: One of two December leftovers whose release dates have been pushed back to give way to the film festival. Will Smith is the sole survivor of a viral outbreak, or so he thinks. The director says this is just loosely based on the book, so no required reading necessary for this one. Continue reading »

July Seconds
In this installment of Flick Pick Special: 2008 Lineup, we take a look at some of the movies hitting theaters July 2008. It’s take two for three franchises: one from TV and two from comics.

hellboy 2Hellboy II: The Golden Army 07.11 (US)
Cast: Ron Perlman, Selma Blair
Links: official site
Details: The first movie got a lot of praises for makeup and Ron Perlman’s acting. Guess that is enough motivation to make a second one. Hopefully there’ll be more to sing praises about in this next attempt. Continue reading »

Moneymaking May
In this installment of Flick Pick Special: 2008 Lineup, we take a look at some of the movies hitting theaters May 2008.  This month’ll probably attract the widest range of audiences, offering something for comics and anime fans, fantasy readers, and nostalgic (sorry, Harrison Ford) moviegoers.

iron manIron Man 05.02 (US)
Cast: Robert Downy, Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard
Links: trailer/official site
Details: One of two (at least) Marvel comic adaptations coming out next year. Mandarin is the supervillain.  Shellhead’s been getting a lot of publicity lately with comics series such as Civil War and The Initiative, so watch for (the late) Captain America to come out with his own movie as well in 2009.

Speed Racer 05.09 (US)
Cast: Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci, Susan Sarandon, John Goodman
Details: Based on the popular anime series.  Lots of familiar faces in this one.  This might be the weakest in the May lineup, and it won’t help that it’s showing just a week apart between two sure blockbusters.  But directing brothers Andy and Larry Wachowski (The Matrix) might have something to say about that.

tconTCON: Prince Caspian 05.16 (US)
Cast: William Moseley, Anna Popplewell, Georgie Henley, Skandar Keynes
Details: Re-features the cast in the first movie, who this time are summoned to Narnia by Prince Caspian a couple of hundred years after their first appearance in Narnia.  It seems now that the movies follow the original reading order of the 7-book series; Disney would undoubtedly have kicked things off with TCON: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe because it’s the most popular in the series, but if it was then concerned with Narnia chronology then TCON: The Magician’s Nephew would’ve been the next film. More details on that topic available here.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull 05.22 (US)
Cast: Harrison Ford
Details: Jones pop Sean Connery not on board this time.  Generated some media buzz when the script was reportedly leaked (details).

  1. Think BIG.  The stage gets bigger in each RE; the underground Umbrella Corp lab at Raccoon City in RE1 is relegated to a deja vu setup.  Works well in every trilogy from The Matrix to Pirates to LOTR. Continue reading »
