i am legendTwo things are certain when it comes to futuristic Will Smith movies. One, they earn over a hundred mil. Two, everyone or everything wants a piece of the fresh prince, whether they be aliens or robots or, in this case, zombies with sensitive skin.

Will Smith plays soldier-slash-scientist Robert Neville in the loose movie adaptation of a Richard Matheson novel, which figures like a cross between the premise of Resident Evil, the car picking spree of Grand Theft Auto, and the weird-looking Persians from 300.

The year is 2012, and Robert is the only human resident of NYC Continue reading »

Beowulf Poster

The trailer of the film seemed casted and played all through out by real actors for (1) the graphics are similar to its character reference and (2) a split-second peek at the characters and scenes of the film. It was only in the big screen that the nude and voluptuous Mrs. Pitt became a CG fantasy, very much in annoyance of the male viewers. The resemblance of the characters to the actors are impressively identical except for the height of the computer-generated characters, who seemed small in the big screen. The whole film was as if played in a theatre stage, only enveloped by CG through motion capture of the characters and visual effects of the surroundings.

The Night Watch Poster

A Russian Film based on the first part of a four volume novel with the same title, the movie was translated into an English dubbed version in 2004. It is about a group of people called the Others who exists since the ancient times. The Others are divided into two: the Light or those who are good but likewise imperfect and of the Dark or those who serves only himself. The Light Others are in the form of magicians or mages, shape-shifters, and sorceress while the Dark Others lives as vampires, dark mages and dark witches. Those who are in the middle are the Inquisitors who may either come from the Light or Dark Others who maintains the treaty between these races. The Others can enter the Twilight where the Twilight feeds from the energy of those who enters it but those who can survive long can take advantage of the Twilight’s natural surroundings. For example in the Level 1, Others can walk the earth at speed in a sepia toned environment. While the Light Others are the Night Watch, Dark Others are the Day Watch who maintains the treaty at an everyday basis.

30 Days of Night Poster

We watched this film in a very special occasion and hearing that this was a good film from friends, I gulped my own nervous breakdowns. I have to tell you that I am quite biased in watching horror films involving vampires, werewolves and zombies. I particularly like zombies but wasn’t fond of Resident Evil but during my childhood, we had our own VHS tape of a popular zombie film that came on a remake recently where the undead are not only walking but running, jumping and good thing, not flying.

The Condemned Poster

Let’s thank the Japanese for a very creative mind so foreign counterparts can try formulated film-making. You heard it right, this is another sort of a remake of a Japanese teen disaster film called Battle Royal where a bunch of students were forced to kill each other and the last one who stands goes free. This film can be best summarized through what a girl in Battle Royal (through dubbed, of course) said at her last breath: “We are all stupid.”

Premonition Poster

This is a remake from a Japanese film with the same English title (Yogen in Japanese) that taunts our minds in deciphering whether Linda is psychotic or a prophet. Although a remake, the stories differ in character situations and occupations. If you’re going to watch this film on DVD, prepare a pen and paper so you can make your own calendar of events for the week long anticipation of the death of her husband, Jim.

Wicker Park Poster

A film made for us stalkers and those likewise who have been stalked, let’s simplify our minds to admit that stalking is as summarized by one of the four characters in the film, “Love makes us do the craziest things”. Stalking had never been a crime (thank God) but it is scary for someone you’ve branded as should be out of your proximity then came barging in your privacy. For some, stalking is a very romantic move as we try to get to know the person we admire deeply but in an observer’s view. But for the victim who realizes that the intrusion is no longer pleasant news, the scenes can get ugly.

Room1408 Poster

We all have our ghosts left behind that sooner or later will haunt us. Heard this kind of theme for lead characters? Well, we won’t be avoiding that kind of plot in this film. An adaption of Stephen King’s short story with the same title, we meet a novelist (Mike Enslin) who destroys ghost folklore through scientific investigations CSI style. While a friend negatively endorses this film as a waste of time, I couldn’t get that old fat lady with a kitchen knife out of my head as she tremendously invaded my state of mind as the film progressed. 1. Think BIG.  The stage gets bigger in each RE; the underground Umbrella Corp lab at Raccoon City in RE1 is relegated to a deja vu setup.  Works well in every trilogy from The Matrix to Pirates to LOTR. Continue reading »
