For my students last Saturday at their Comprehensive Exam, one objected against the words “It’s hard being a loser.” I was stunned when I read the quote I have written above the instructions for the examination realizing that they were downhearted by these words. So I have to explain that this only means that in life, you have to prove your worth by at first admitting yourself your own weaknesses. Secondly, a certain passage in Don Bosco’s life featured the same teenage boys who have the same fate. Lastly, this came from a teenage gangster in the film called Gridiron Gang.

A Russian Film based on the first part of a four volume novel with the same title, the movie was translated into an English dubbed version in 2004. The Others are divided into two: the Light or those who are good but likewise imperfect and of the Dark or those who serves only himself. The Light Others are in the form of magicians or mages, shape-shifters, and sorceress while the Dark Others lives as vampires, dark mages and dark witches. Those who are in the middle are the Inquisitors who may either come from the Light or Dark Others who maintains the treaty between these races. The Others can enter the Twilight where the Twilight feeds from the energy of those who enters it but those who can survive long can take advantage of the Twilight’s natural surroundings. For example in the Level 1, Others can walk the earth at speed in a sepia toned environment. While the Light Others are the Night Watch, Dark Others are the Day Watch who maintains the treaty at an everyday basis.

Let’s thank the Japanese for a very creative mind so foreign counterparts can try formulated film-making. You heard it right, this is another sort of a remake of a Japanese teen disaster film called Battle Royal where a bunch of students were forced to kill each other and the last one who stands goes free. This film can be best summarized through what a girl in Battle Royal (through dubbed, of course) said at her last breath: “We are all stupid.”

This is a remake from a Japanese film with the same English title (Yogen in Japanese) that taunts our minds in deciphering whether Linda is psychotic or a prophet. Although a remake, the stories differ in character situations and occupations. If you’re going to watch this film on DVD, prepare a pen and paper so you can make your own calendar of events for the week long anticipation of the death of her husband, Jim.

A film made for us stalkers and those likewise who have been stalked, let’s simplify our minds to admit that stalking is as summarized by one of the four characters in the film, “Love makes us do the craziest things”. Stalking had never been a crime (thank God) but it is scary for someone you’ve branded as should be out of your proximity then came barging in your privacy. For some, stalking is a very romantic move as we try to get to know the person we admire deeply but in an observer’s view. But for the victim who realizes that the intrusion is no longer pleasant news, the scenes can get ugly.

There really should be a comparison review among films involving contests in music, dance, or sports. As we realize it, most stories (either based on a true story or not) has an ending of a tie-breaker. Another bad note in this film is that same leading lady which we’ve seen at Stomp The Yard that makes us want to scream, Will you ever quit and go out of your comfort zone?, since she’s been there and done that.
If you love to watch dance orchestrated films, Drumline is a combination of music and dance performances as we see how our marching bands struggles to bust a move during half time. It’s like watching the younger relatives of American Pie in the summer band camp only training as if you’re in the movie of The Replacements. It’s also the battle between old school and new sounds where there is a tradition we’ve seen in most closed knit groups that should be respected and followed. I now wonder what happens during my friend Kiel’s cheering practice with the Rektikano cheer during his time at tertiary school or how difficult it really is to spell when doing tricks at national TV. The feeling could be as close as to what Drumline tells. Oh yes, how well can you stand straight for a dawn to sunset practice while holding your instrument and shaking your bonbon the whole time. It’s actually nastier than ballet practice where your shoes get stained red blood.

Stephen King’s The Green Mile (1996) was first published in a series of short novels with 6 volumes. It was viewed in the big screen in 1999 with Tom Hanks as the lead character potraying Paul Edgecomb, a corrections officer in block E of the Cold Mountain Penitentiary.
Mr. Edgecomb spent his senior days at a home of the aged, a close walking distance to a beat-up house where a very talented mouse who was named Mr. Jingles, still lived. The mouse is just one of the mysteries in this film and a very interesting past time in that block of prison cell during his time.
